Character: A rugged fell standing an its own in the Wasdale valley. Named after its characteristic "Barrow " shaped nature an the past prevalence of yew trees, this fell commands a great view of the valley and the lake and is the only fell where it is possible to get uninterrupted views of Sca Fell, Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Kirkfell and Pillar all in one frame.
WasdaleWeb's opinion: It is not a simple walk with most approaches involving some scrambling or at least a head for heights; but it is simply the VERY best fell in the whole of the Wasdale valley (In my humble opinion!)
Approaches: Yewbarrow is most commonly climbed from Overbeck car park, up the ridge to Great Door, from the Overbeck path to Dore Head and then up Stirrup Crag, or as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe. Each end of the fell is scrambly but the summit is like a football pitch. The scrambles can be avoided by walking from Overbeck towards Dore Hhead and branching up right through the grass and ling to the summit path before you reach Stirrup crag. There is no path as such but consultation with a map should reveal when to branch off.
