2007 Sunday 11th November 2007 11.00am on the War memorial at the summit of Great Gable
News Update !
There has been a lot of upset this year following an article in the Whitehaven News and other papers in which the FRCC who organise the memorial service had apparently ordered people not to take wreaths up to the summit as they are considered litter and need collecting afterwards.
It is my opinion as a walker and climber and also the opinion of over 40 people who have emailed this site, that this statement is both unfounded and absurd. Each and every poppy left on the memorial represents the life of a fallen soldier, and as such it is entirely appropriate that they are present on the memorial on the summitof Great Gable.
To this end I have offered to go up Great Gable once a fortnight to gather the wreaths that are in a bad way and bring them down, I have received similar offers from 40 other local mountaineers. To this end I will as normal be going up to the summit and placing a wreath there, if others wish to follow their own mind and do the same then so be it.
I hope the FRCC has been misquoted when they described the wreaths and poppies as litter, and I have no wish to cause a storm over this, its just that there are times in my mind that you need to stand up and be counted this is one of those.

Note added 12 November 2007
I am happy to report that not only were appropriate tributes left as normal on the summit of Great Gable. but the FRCC made no comment or announcement regarding their earlier efforts at banning them, The FRCC alos made it clear that the service was for everyone, members or not, and it seems happily that this earlier problem is now sorted, so many thanks go to the FRCC for this happy state of affairs.
The issue was picked up by the local press in Cumbria, and also in both the Daily Mail and the Telegraph, and there was a clear support shown for appropriate dedications being left, to this end we will be continuing to monitor the summit to ensure all is left tidy.
We will be checking the summit to make sure there are no decaying poppies or wreaths blowing about and on the 15 December a group of people will be making a day of tidying everything on Great Gable , from coke cans to cigarette buts, and everyone is more than welcome to come and help !
The 2006 rememberance day service will be held on the summit of Great Gable at 11.00 am on 12 November 2006.
Everyone is welcome to attend and a report and photos will be posted here as soon as possible

Dawn broke on rememberanc Sunday this year to reveal a cold but clear day with not a cloud in the sky, then as the day developed the weather just got better and better and about a thousand people gathered on the summit to pay their respects.
This year I recorded the short service on the summit as well as recording my own ascent up the fell and the thoughts going through my head. These files are below and you can listen to them by downloading them, the are fairly large and so on dialup you may want to give it while. The files are MP3 format and so should play on most pc and mac media players

2003
Each and every year the FRCC organise a non-demominational service of remembrance on the summit of Great Gable at the war memorial. Walkers and climbers from all over the UK make their way to the summit for 11am to lay wreaths, listen to a short sermon by the FRCC and hold a minute's silence.
This year was no exception and approx 500 people climbed the fell from Wasdale, Seathwaite and Honister to remember the dead from the wars. The weather was a usual cold but thankfully dry and even the cloud managed to disperse for a short while at 11am. The address was given by John Robinson, the vice president of the FRCC.
